Just for fun, here is a personality chart to figure out what kind of dragon your character is. This chart used to exist to guide people on how to design their dragon in the first rendition of the Dragon Class, and then later used as a rough but optional guideline should someone be lost in designing the dragon.
Element | Personality Trait | Physical Traits | Abilities |
Water | Go with the flow, laid back. | Fins or wings that act as fins (for swimming underwater at high speed). Elongated tail with a fin on the end for underwater navigation. Spinal fin for hydrodynamics (also to help with speed underwater). Colors lean more towards different shades of blue, blue-purple, and blue-green. | Breathe Underwater, Fast Swimmers |
Air | Mind is elsewhere, often forgetful and easily distracted. | Thin form (often elongated - think Asian lung), large wings (or without wings but can still fly), either thin fur or small spikes down the spine. Long whiskers and horns. Light bluish-green to sky blue. | Fast dragons, wings can cause powerful winds. |
Poisonous/Venomous | Toxic personality, often manipulative and lying. | 1. Snake-like body without any arms or legs OR with multiple arms and legs (more than four), either way would be a land-dragon (without wings). OR 2. They can have a single set of wings for arms, a pair of back legs, and a club, arrow-head, or barbed tail. Vibrant colors, almost neon/glowstick colors. | Can either spit acid, release toxic clouds from it's maw, shed toxic scales, or has a venomous bite. |
Fire | Hot headed, angry, often violent. | Often with four legs or a pair of legs and arms. Large wings for flight with hooks on the end of each wing (think bat thumbs). Multiple horns, usually above the eyes and nose/nostrils. Large spines running down the back to the end of the tail. Colors run from deep red to hot oranges. | Breathes fire. Scales can be hot to the touch (but not enough that you have to wear gloves). |
Ice | Cold. Doesn't sugar coat things, brutally honest (and I do mean brutally). Sometimes tends to ignore people they don't like. | 1. Can be depicted in appearance similar to that of the fire dragon or 2. Elongated body, similar to that of the Asian Lung but heavier-set and covered in long fur (wingless but can still fly). Ice blues to light greys and teals. Some may have darker blues/grays for patterns in their fur. | Can either breathe icy-wind (that can turn it's target to ice)/ or it can cause the temperature to drop to the point where people start to freeze. Their scales are often cold (but not so much you need gloves) to the touch. Icy bite/claws/tail spikes that can shoot icicles at target. |
Earth | Stubborn and immovable. Refuses to see any other point of view once they have one, often in denial of reality. | Like a really large (just big enough to ride) scale-y hound. Steadfast and powerful legs, slow moving but heavy. Has a short neck and tail (or no tail at all) compared to the other elements. Thick scales and rough spines. No. Wings. Colors are shades of brown and grays of the earth. | It's roar is so loud and powerful it makes the earth shake. Powerful and unyielding jaws when it comes to biting. Hard to physically move the dragon. |
Light | Warm and kind. Tries to do good in the world. | Similar to the fire dragon but much thinner in form. Claws and horns are often elongated but are thin. Could possibly have long whiskers as well. Golds and whites. | It's scales are either so bright (either through color and/or reflection) that they can blind others or they breath hot air that lights up so brightly that it not only does damage to their targets but can blind them. |
Shadow | Mysterious. Keeps to themselves. Quiet. | Dragons that are just big enough to ride. Sleek in form. Four legs for easier movement on the ground. Sharp hooked claws for climbing. Tail should not be too long but not too short, strictly for aerial movements. Blacks and really dark purples. | Breathes a black smoke for getaways or it's scales shed in such a manner that it causes a smoke to appear for it to easily hide in darkness. Strong night vision. |
Electric | Full of energy, outgoing. Isn't the kind to slow down. | Just big enough to ride. Velociraptor-like (Jurassic Park version) body, minus the middle toe claw. Wings similar to the 2nd option of the poisonous/venomous dragon. Yellows, whites, and electric-blue colors. | Produces electricity in it's body. Can cause static shock to anyone who touches it. Can shoot lightning from it's mouth (side affect can be temporary blindness and/or burns). |
Tips for Abilities and Physical Traits of Complex Personalities of Dragons
In the case that your dragon is represented by multiple elements, the description and abilities of your dragon may get complicated. The easiest way to figure out how much of any physical trait or ability should be included in the end result should be how much your personality actually leans towards those traits.
The closer they are to a specific personality trait, the more you will look physically like that dragon. The percentage of how much you are towards those personality traits should also go towards how much of that dragon will be. Some physical traits may trump others depending on the percentage rate. If your dragon is majority of Earth (or Earth has the highest percentage of all elements), no matter which other elements it may have, it will always be wingless (or at least have very small unusable wings) and flightless. Same goes for the other elements.
Abilities of elements can be shared depending on the structure of the dragon's body. If you were 10% Ice, your dragon can have a cold bite or would be cold to the touch, if your dragon was at least 30% Ice and you decided to add spines/tail spikes (and color-coordinate them to the Ice element) to your dragon, they can shoot icy spikes from them. And this is regardless of whatever element they lean the most towards, even fire!
